Some accounts say that the name "Minsk" derived from the Slavonic word "miena", which means "trade" or "barter", considering that the community in this area was originally a trading settlement. Another account suggests that the name came from "Mensk", a name given to the settlement in Meniha river, which was supposedly the alternative name for Minsk's Niamiha river.
